21st Century Learning

21st century, also called “Information Age, is quite different from all eras of human history, so is the learning in 21st century. Learning in 21st century is purposeful and unlike past, it is not prescribed. It mainly focuses on acquiring the needed skills in order to be successful. Learners of Information Age are, obviously, supposed to have much more skills than those that are in the past.

Albert Einstein’s famous quote “Once you stop learning, you start dying.” clearly explains what a 21st century learner should be: a life-long learner. In this century of rapid and constant change, learners are supposed to be able to keep up with these changes easily. The learners of Information Age are expected to process, evaluate and apply the information, not just to memorize it. The learners should always be ready to learn and use the information and skills effectively. The learners of this age are must be confident with their qualifications and be creative in order to be successful in the busy and competitive job market of 21st century.

Like the expectations of learning changed, teaching should be adjusted according to the needs. It must be applied with new approaches that are student centered.Teaching must focus on improving learners’ creative and critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills and decision-making skills.

"It's not that we use technology, we live technology." -Godfrey Reggio

Technology is a significant and irreplaceable element of 21st century. It is blindingly obvious that in this age of constant technological improvement, the most seeked feature of learners is to be able to use technology effectively. ICT Literacy (which means effective use of information and communication technology tools) must be taught to learners starting from a young age and the use of technology in learning enviroments should not only be limited to the teacher, but should serve every learner as a tool for personal improvement.
